The Amount of Oxygen Circulating in the blood is known as Blood Oxygen Level. Most of the oxygen transfer by red blood cells, Which collect oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to all the parts of the body.

A persons blood oxygen level indicates how well the red blood cells deliver oxygen from the lungs to the cells.

A normal persons blood oxygen level is usually 95% or higher. Some people with lung disease can have around 90%. 

Most  children & adults do not need to monitor their blood oxygen level. In fact, most doctors will not examine unless you are showing some symptoms, such as weakness, fever, cough, and shortness of breath, or chest pain.

The “SpO2” reading on an oximeter or pulse oximeter shows the percentage of oxygen in the blood. If your SpO2 reading is lower than 95% then call your family doctor immediately.

These 3 ways are very helpful if you are in home isolation or you do not have any oxygen support.

1. Pronal Breathing

Proning is the process of laying down a patient on their abdomen or stomach. “This posture has been medically proven to improve blood oxygen level in patients with low oxygen”. This measure or position can be used when the patient faces difficulty in breathing and the SpO2 level is under <94%.

Patients who test positive for (Covid-19) are put in a covid center or under home isolation. However, for the ones who may be facing oxygen depletion, or waiting for medical help, simply lying down on your stomach could be a great help.

Note: It is important to avoid proning after having a meal. While proning, if your body experiences pain or discomfort, it is advised to stop the process immediately.

Pronal breathing has medically proven to be useful for patients who are in home isolation or even those who are hospitalized.

The important thing you require for pronal breathing is pillows, which would need to be placed like this- one below the neck, the second one below the chest, and the last two pillows placed below the shins as shown in the picture.

The guidelines for pronal breathing were also shared by the Health Ministry. Here’s how to attempt pronal breathing and get relief from sudden oxygen depletion:

-1. Start with lying on your stomach

-2. Then Lying on your right side

-3. Then Lying on the left side

-4. Sitting Up

-5. Go back to lying on your belly

Make sure to change your position alternatively, but do not spend more than 30 minutes in one position. The pillows can also be adjusted, according to your comfort. 

2. Breathing

Lung capacity is the total amount of oxygen that your lungs can hold. Over time, our lung capacity and lung function usually begin to decrease gradually, occurring after the mid-20s.

The situation of coronavirus in the country is again at its peak, The biggest problems in this pandemic are the oxygen crisis and lack of hospital beds. Oxygen deficiency can be corrected by breathing techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing and Buteyko nose breathing.

1. Diaphragmatic breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing is also known as belly breathing, engages the diaphragm, which is supposed to do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to breathing.

Follow these steps to engage in diaphragmatic breathing:

  • Sit straight, with one hand on the chest and the other on the stomach.
  • Inhale through your nose for 3 seconds, feeling your stomach move out.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth.
  • Repeat the process
2. Buteyko Nose Breathing

The Buteyko nose breathing method was invented by Ukrainian scientist Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko in The 1950s to control asthma attacks.

By practicing the Buteyko Method you can experience more open airways and improved blood circulation in a matter of time

Follow these steps to engage in Buteyko nose breathing:

  • Sit Straight on the chair or floor
  • Inhale through the nose to fill the lungs, keep your mouth close during this breathing method.
  • Then slowly exhale through your nose.
  • Repeat this process.

3. Hydrate


The human body contains more than 70 percent of water, which delivers nutrients to all parts of your body. 

The blood contains more than 90% water, which improves blood oxygen circulation in the body. 

Water is also helpful in removing toxins from the body, for example, water flushes toxins and waste from the body through urination.
